The
town of Stamford
Stamford is a small market town of some 20,000
inhabitants. It is one of the finest stone
towns in the country. In 1967 Stamford became
the first conservation area designated in
England. The centre of the town retains many
stone buildings of the 17th, 18th and 19th
centuries together with six ancient churches.
The medieval layout and street pattern has
been retained, giving the town a unique attraction.
Just outside Stamford is Burghley House, one
of the grandest Elizabethan houses in England.
Burghley is host to several annual events
including the international horse trials.
Nearby is Rutland Water, Europes largest
man-made lake, and Tolethorpe Hall where the
oldest provincial open air Shakespeare Festival
is held each year. |
