The
town of Grantham
Situated on the River Witham, Grantham
is dominated by the 281ft tall spire of St.
Wulframs Church. The town was mentioned
in the Doomsday Book as a Royal Manor and
the Angel and Royal Hotel was originally a
court of King John. Sir Isaac Newton, whose
imposing bronze statue stands on St. Peters
Hill, was the most famous pupil of Granthams
Kings School. Britains first woman Prime
Minister, Margaret Thatcher, was born in the
town. As supermarkets and the service industry
replaced heavy industry, and the factories
lay empty, Grantham was left without its market
town charm. It is now endeavouring to re-invent
itself as a sub-regional shopping centre and
trying to plan with real purpose. The town
has a current population of around 34,000.
